Watsonville, CA - The Board of Directors of the Santa Cruz County Fair has selected local community leader Michael Bethke to be the new Fair manager.  Bethke was selected from a pool of 26 applicants and will start work on April 1st.  He is thrilled to join the planning efforts for this year’s County Fair.

Bethke’s extensive background includes almost twenty years of experience as a public administrator and commissioner in the fields of planning, building and public works as well as development experience as a licensed General Building & Engineering Contractor.  He is also a certified Green Building professional, a guest lecturer at San José State University, and was named the 2008 “Man of the Year” by the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce.  Bethke holds a BA and Master’s in Urban Planning from San José State.

“Michael Bethke has the perfect qualifications and leadership skills to help lead our County Fair facility into the 21st century and I’m really glad to hear about his appointment,” said Jess Brown, Executive Director of the County Farm Bureau.  Santa Cruz City Council member Lynn Robinson notes “Mike is the consummate community leader, and all of us in Santa Cruz are extremely proud of his selfless and incredible accomplishments.”

Dr. Brian King, President of Cabrillo College and advisor to the “Agri-Culture” education program, notes “As a fellow Rotarian, Mike truly knows how to practice ‘Service Above Self,’ and I think he’ll be an excellent Fair manager.” County Sheriff Phil Wowak said “I recently had the great pleasure of swearing Michael in as a new member of the Sheriff’s Motor Posse (Search & Rescue Team), and I really look forward to working with him on public safety issues at the county fairgrounds.”

Former County Agricultural Commissioner Dave Moeller said “Mike has been a good friend and professional colleague for many years, and is probably the most down-to-earth, get-it-done kind of guy I’ve ever met.”  South County Supervisor Tony Campos, who currently serves as the Chair of the County Board of Supervisors, was delighted to hear about Michael’s appointment, and added “I am really looking forward to expanding a collaborative partnership with the County Fairgrounds.”

Bruce McPherson, former State Senator and Secretary of State, concluded by saying “Michael represents an emerging type of creative and yet pragmatic community leader who is driven by an honest and compassionate consensus-building desire to simply do the right thing, which is exactly what our great State of California now so desperately needs.  I truly wish him the very best with this new endeavor.”
