“Hanchai Receives 2019 Heritage Hog Scholarship”

Watsonville, CA – Aromas 4-H member Isabel Hanchai is the recipient of the 2019 Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation Heritage Hog Scholarship. Isabel graduated from Connecting Waters Charter School as a junior in 2016 with a 4.2 GPA. She continued her education at Gavilan College with plans to transfer to Fresno State University in the spring of 2020 majoring in Animal Sciences/Agribusiness. Isabel hopes to be a high school Ag Teacher upon finishing her education at Fresno State.

For the last seven years, Hanchai has been a dedicated member of her local 4-H Club; she’s an active member of the Santa Cruz County Fair Junior Livestock Committee, and serves as the host for the still barn watch at the King City Fairgrounds. The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation wishes Isabel all the success in her future educational endeavors.

The Heritage Hog Scholarship Program is a fundraiser dedicated to Fairgrounds improvements while also providing a scholarship for a Junior Livestock exhibitor to further their education. Each year the Fairgrounds Foundation selects a local 4-H, FFA or independent student with experience raising livestock for the Fair who is pursuing a higher education to raise a hog provided by the Foundation. The hog will be exhibited at the Fair and sold at the end of the Junior Livestock Auction. The proceeds from the hog sale, along with other donations will be used by the Fairgrounds Foundation to fund the scholarship and the Fairground improvements.

Following the Fair and upon course enrollment Hanchai will be awarded $2,000 to use towards her educational expenses. The Heritage Hog Scholarship is great way to encourage current youth involvement in the Fair Livestock activities and foster future educational endeavors for the hard working junior exhibitors.

Each year the Fairgrounds Foundation solicits donations for this program as a means to raise funds for the scholarship and Fairground improvements. Donations to the Heritage Hog Scholarship Program can be made at the Fairgrounds Foundation website fairgrounds-foundation.org or by contacting the Heritage Hog Committee at (831) 786-9698.

The Santa Cruz County Fair celebrates the rich agricultural history of our community and people, and invests heavily in bringing this heritage to our youth. The 2019 Fair will be held September 11-15 at the Fairgrounds located on Highway 152 just east of Watsonville. Information on the Fair, and the Fairgrounds - a year round entertainment and event venue, can be found at santacruzcountyfair.com
