Crum crowned county pie champ. Soquel's Kasey Crum took top honors Tuesday at the Santa Cruz County Fair's 34th annual Apple Pie Baking Contest. Crum, whose pie judges deemed tastiest, also took first in the senior division 18 and older, followed by Nathan Kasunich of Watsonville in second and Mike Biddle of Felton in third.

At the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, the main stage is set, a sea lion tank has been filled, and dozens of booths, installations and entire halls have been readied. It's quiet enough for normal conversation, although only for a few more hours. It's the calm before the fair.
