WATSONVILLE -- Food is a huge part of any county fair. For many, the smells and tastes bring back childhood memories. It's also an excuse to eat deep fried food off sticks.
Rumors of the imminent demise of county fairs haven't reached Santa Cruz County. The annual fair, which started Tuesday and concludes Sunday at the County Fairgrounds outside Watsonville, continues to plow the same ground it has for 126 years, so to speak.
Hundreds gathered alongside Santa Cruz County firefighters, police and other first responders Sunday for a solemn yet hopeful 9/11 memorial at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, commemorating the tragedy and honoring those who responded to the attacks and helped the country recover.

In 2001, area residents heading to Watsonville for the Santa Cruz County Fair’s opening day had their plans abruptly changed when the 9/11 terrorist attacks took place that morning.

The day after the Santa Cruz County Fair ended in September, Bethke did a full assessment of the annual event, which saw upward of 70,000 visitors in 2010. The attendance nearly broke records, but Bethke had already settled on a new goal: 100,000 attendees the following year.
